An Areal Rainfall Estimator Using Differential Propagation Phase: Evaluation Using a C-Band Radar and a Dense Gauge Network in the Tropics

چکیده
An areal rainfall estimator based on differential propagation phase is proposed and evaluated using the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) CPOL radar and a dense gauge network located near Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Twelve storm events during the summer rainy season (December 1998–March 1999) are analyzed and radar–gauge comparisons are evaluated in terms of normalized error and normalized bias. The areal rainfall algorithm proposed herein results in normalized error of 14% and normalized bias of 5.6% for storm total accumulation over an area of around 100 km2. Both radar measurement error and gauge sampling error are minimized substantially in the areal accumulation comparisons. The high accuracy of the radar-based method appears to validate the physical assumptions about the rain model used in the algorithm, primarily a gamma form of the drop size distribution model, an axis ratio model that accounts for transverse oscillations for D 4 mm and equilibrium shapes for D > 4 mm, and a Gaussian canting angle distribution model with zero mean and standard deviation 10°. These assumptions appear to be valid for tropical rainfall.

Heavy Rainfall Monitoring by Polarimetric C-Band Weather Radars
Piemonte region, in the north-western Italy, is characterized by complex orography and Mediterranean influence that often causes extreme rainfall event, during the warm season. Although the region is monitored by a dense gauge network (more than one gauge per 100 km 2 ), the ground measurements are often inadequate to properly observe intense and highly variable precipitations. Polarimetric wea...

The paper presents an analysis of the performance of different radar algorithms for rainfall estimation. These are the conventional one based on radar reflectivity factor Z and three polarimetric estimators utilizing different combinations of Z, specific differential phase KDP, and differential reflectivity ZDR. متن کاملC-band dual polarization radar retrieval of rainfall: application of an iterative technique with embedded neural-network
Polarimetric radar measurements at C-band require correction for propagation effects before using them for rainfall retrieval. Since differential phase shift Kdp is affected by the spatial variation of the backscattering differential phase shift δ, a new neural-network estimation technique is applied to remove δ effects on Kdp estimate. In this study we also explore a new hybrid iterative techn...
متن کاملRain-Rate Estimation in the Presence of Hail Using S- Band Specific Differential Phase and Other Radar Parameters
Multiparameter radar measurements were made during a heavy rainfall event accompanied by hail in Colorado. Rainfall rates R and accumulation for this event were estimated using S-band specific differential phase KDP, reflectivity factor ZH, and X-band specific attenuation AH3. These estimates were compared with measurements from a ground-based rain gauge. Both R–KDP and R–AH3 relations were in ...
